“What am I doing here?” – Arthur Rimbaud, writing home from Ethiopia

(Tuesday 14 June 2011) by Julia Bartholomew
Hopefully not a sentiment I will share on arrival in Beijing on Thursday. Here is my travel blog and the beginning of my summer adventures, before law takes over my life in October, and kindly sponsored by the EU who have been good enough to employ me over the past year or so, enabling me to save up for this trip. So to my eurosceptic friends: the EU is not all bad.

My itinerary is a work in progress. Any advice is welcome. Leg 1 is 6 weeks in Asia, roughly: Beijing, Xian, Shanghai and its environs in China then down to Hanoi in Vietnam, pottering down the coast to Saigon and then I’ll see how much time I have left to meander along the Mekong Delta towards Cambodia. Leg 2: 6 weeks in South America- Peru, Argentina and a few days in Rio on the way home.

For now, I will simply try to take some good packing advice: “When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.”
